The “only” way to lose weight is to under eat and over exercise right?!

What if that mentality was causing you more harm than good? Listen, we have been programmed to think that to lose weight we need to eat less and workout more. This is one of the most common things I hear as a health and wellness coach! All of the messages you hear tell you that this is the only way to actually drop weight. There are quite a few problems with this way of thinking!

Let’s start with undereating. This is the easiest way see results fast … BUT it comes at a price. The average woman needs an average of 1,100 or 1,200 calories per day just to keep body functions going. So, when you restrict your calories your body will keep your main systems running (brain, heart, etc.), but this will be at the price of something else in your body. Not eating enough food works temporarily, but our bodies are smart, and eventually as you continue to reduce calories, your body will adapt, and will store fat as it protects your body from starvation. In an effort to preserve the fat stores during starvation, your body will begin using muscle for energy. If you are looking to tone up your physique, this is problematic. Under eating also leaves you feeling lethargic, irritable, it messes with your sleep patterns, and makes you feel less than stellar. When you restrict one or more food groups (i.e carbs on the KETO diet) you also begin messing with your body’s hormone levels. Messing with hormones levels can lead to an imbalance in sex hormones, intensified menopause or peri-menopause symptoms among other problems. Having proper hormonal balance affects not only your fertility, but it also affects your bone health, cardiovascular health, mood, weight, and digestive function. Ladies, we do NOT want to mess with our hormones!


Over exercising is another issue that is so common! We have also been programmed to think that we need to spend hours on the treadmill or Stairmaster to see any results. Listen up … this is probably the most important thing for you to read … exercise is a stressor to your body. When you do a lot of cardio workouts, like running, HIIT, etc. multiple times per week, it increases the stress hormone cortisol in our bodies causing a lot of stress on our systems. If we continue to push long enough and also have other stressors in our lives like digestive issues, under eating, lack of sleep, blood sugar imbalances, and work-related stress, etc. we end up being in a chronic sympathetic state also known as the fight or flight response. When we are in this state, our body again goes into self-preservation mode. Now instead of helping us to lose weight and tone up, it is holding on to anything it can to keep you alive and your body systems running. In more simpler terms … all of your excessive cardio work is not helping you reach your goals!

So, you might be thinking … ok, great, so what am I supposed to do? The answer is really quite simple and I am sure it will come as a relief to you. All you need to do to get started is to eat enough of the right foods at the right time. That is all! If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, focus on your food intake to get your metabolism working for you again, and to get your hormones balanced again. So many of the results that you are looking for can be found by just eating MORE of the right foods! This means foods that include proteins, fats, and carbs. Yes, ladies! You need carbs! Healthy carbs are the not the enemy and are essential for proper hormone function!

Worried about exercise and moving your body? That is absolutely important to your overall healthy and wellness, but please hear me when I say that your nutrition is first priority! Exercise is the icing on the cake! Listen up … there is NO reason that you need to do more than 30 minutes of exercise per day. You can see tremendous fat loss with just 2 cardio workouts per week of 20-30 min. That’s all! Gone are the days feeling you need to be a slave to the cardio machines hoping for, and not seeing any results.
