5 Common Myths About Dieting

Who wouldn’t be confused?!?

With all of the noise in the marketplace and in the world around us, who wouldn’t be confused when it comes to the best way to lose weight? Losing weight can seem like an overwhelmingly daunting task that can leave you feeling frustrated and hopeless.

There is so much information out there that it is hard to know what is will really work for you. Along with all of that information, there is some really BAD advice on ways that you can drop the weight you are so desperate to lose.

Today I wanted to dispel five of the most common myths about dieting. I think you might be surprised by what you read! 😉

Myth #1: Just eat less! Eek! If I had a dollar for every time I heard this, I could retire! Here is the thing … your body is so incredibly smart! Probably smarter than you give it credit for! Your body’s main instinct is to protect itself from starvation. It has many coping strategies that it will employ if it feels like it is in danger of not getting enough sustenance. When you do not give your body enough of the right foods it goes into self preservation mode, and it will hold on to every ounce of fat to use as fuel. Definitely not what you want to be doing if you are looking to burn some fat!

Myth #2: You need to do more cardio! Step away from the treadmill! Listen, I do not know many people that actually love doing cardio. Is it important to fat loss? Absolutely! But it has its place and should be used strategically when you are trying to drop weight. Excessive cardio can raise the levels of cortisol in your body leading to decreased fat metabolism (fat burn) as well as a weakened immune system. In the FASTer Way To Fat Loss we strategically limit our cardio workouts to just two days per week to maximize our fat metabolism without raising cortisol levels.

Myth #3: Eat a low-fat diet: Fats get a bad rap in this world! Fats are super important to your health and wellness as a woman. But, it is important that you are eating enough healthy fats! Healthy fats are imperative to healthy hormones in females, as well has helping to keep you satiated. Examples of healthy fats that are important to maintain healthy hormones include olive oil, coconut oil, avocados nuts, eggs, and salmon among others. Not eating enough fats causes you to be hungry, have dry skin, fatigue, and even trouble regulating your body temperature. If you have been living a low-fat lifestyle start adding some healthy fats into your diet … you will be surprised by how much better you feel!

Myth #4: You need to workout 7 days per week for at least an hour to see results: One thing that your body does NOT need when you are trying to lose weight is to be exhausted. Never giving your body time to rest is a recipe for burn-out, injury, and increased cortisol levels that will, as mentioned above, impede your body’s ability to burn fat. In the FASTer Way To Fat Loss many of our clients don’t even workout at all and still see amazing results! For those that want to kick their results up a notch employ our 30 minute workouts. We do NOT recommend working out more than 5 days per week to allow your body time to rest, recover, and build that lean, calorie burning muscle that so many are looking for!

Myth #5: Sleep is not important. This may shock you, but there is a direct correlation between sleep and weight loss. Not getting giving your body enough sleep will impede your ability to lose weight. Hunger is controlled by two hormones: leptin and ghrelin. When you don't sleep enough, your cortisol levels rise. This is the stress hormone that is frequently associated with fat gain. Cortisol is the hormone that also makes you crave foods. A lack of sleep causes your body to produce more ghrelin. The combination of the high cortisol levels and high ghrelin levels is a recipe for fat gain since this combination shuts down the area of your brain that leaves you feel full or satisfied. If you have not been prioritizing sleep and are looking to burn fat, start prioritizing sleep tonight!
